Holiday

06/11/2011

Every few years we have a big family holiday, fortunately my kids two favourite playgrounds fall in line with mine, Disney world or Maui. I guess Reese’s new found passion for windsurfing influenced his decision but to be honest it was an united decision to go for Maui and as the year passed the numbers swelled to twelve as friends joined, even persuaded my mum to come alone.

I’ve been very lucky in life and every time I get that Maui ticket I can hardly believe I’m going again, the first time we came here Samantha was only nine months old and took her first steps here, that was twenty one years ago, yet little seems to have changed, and what has is just for the better.

The beaches were packed; you had to fight for every wave, as Maui seemed like the only windsurfing destination on the planet. I’m not so sure those making a living out of windsurfing will agree but I can’t think of a better time to come to Maui, there’s simply less people on the beaches, no more fighting, even at Hookipa.

We arrive to find the AWT, American Windsurf Tour in full action and while I wanted to stand on the lookout and watch wave after wave being ripped apart I just wanted to get out on the water, plus, for the first time I was enjoying my kids complaining. That should be kid, Reece was whinging “come on dad, we can see this anytime, I want to go windsurfing”.
