Triple

05/07/2011

I’ve just been to Grand Canaria for three days and while it was primarily for Skye Boys wedding, there was never a chance windsurfing wasn’t going to be on the menu. Easyjet baggage restrictions only allowed for me to take two sails and knowing Pozo always delivers I’d opted for 5.4 and 5.0 before a last minute email from the groom suggesting 4.7 and 4.2 would fit the forecast better.

Having a 5.4 as my biggest sail already felt unnatural, so you can imagine how I felt leaving with just a 4.7 as my light wind alternative in my bag. I’d like to blame Skye Boy for the final result but to be fair he had been on a 3.7 on the day of the email and all the forecasts were predicting stronger winds. Reality had me borrowing a 5m from Scott Mckercher, even then I was slightly underpowered.

I’m guessing it must be ten years since I last sailed there but with the passing of time and my memories of Pozo have been blurred by the amazing pictures and videos that emanate from its shores. But sailing here you start to wonder how these guys and girls make it look so good, if you took the wind away this place wouldn’t fair any better than Clacton on a good day, but then that’s the one ingredient that never stops to amaze, the endless wind.

The Easyjet weight limit also meant I had to swap my camera bag for a pocket alternative, so excuse me for the lack of pictures, more to the point, the lack of a sequence from Philip Coster’s triple loop. Actually I didn’t even see it, or ether of the next two he landed but that didn’t stop me believing it, enough people had and the beach was full of it.

The PWA event kicks off in the next days and with that in his armoury you wonder how he wont walk away without the crown and another triple in the bag, this time there’ll be a camera or two capable of capturing the action.

Getting back to the main reason for my trip, the wedding. I’ll confess, this is normally my wife’s domain, as she puts it “she loves a good wedding” while I’m just dragged along for the ride, so can you imagine how much shit I got when I called to say Mr & Mrs Skye’s wedding was the best I’d been to… did I mention she couldn’t make it…
