Am I loosing the plot, crawled out of my tent at 5am to watch the sun coming over the mountain before heading to the water with a SUP board. To be honest I thought my camping days were over and as for the SUP boards, well lets just say I tried it but didn’t understand what all the fuss was about, why paddle when a rig will do.
To be honest I still think that but when the wind is below five knots why sit on the beach, particularly when the waves are so perfect. I’m in Punta San Carlos Baja California Mexico with Jem Hall to can bank a bunch of technique articles for next few months of Board, as my mates at homes keep telling me “not a bad job if you can get it”.
So far its been a real adventure, ok it was just a regular flight to San Diego but from there we switched planes for something a little smaller and two hours later I’m looking over a bunch of tents perched on top of the cliff. To be fair there’s a whole bunch of wooden building but they’re for the more important things in life, board storage, a bar and kitchen.
I though I’d left my camping days to the kids but I’ve got to say the crew from Solo Sports have made the whole experience a comfortable one but when you consider we’re in the middle of know where the real surprise has been the quality of the food, its amazing and as far removed from camping as you can get.
The days here are long (particularly if you’re an insomniac), as everyone seems to greet the morning sun, waves then are also long and glassy so you can’t help but join in with the morning SUPers but for my money these boards come into the own at the first sign of a breeze. Through a rig on and I’m catching so many more waves, not to mention how much easier it is getting out back. Though once the real wind arrive (which isn’t every day) I’m jumping back onto something a little smaller, the surprise though is I’m probably learning more about sailing my wave board while WindSUPing, the winder time is just for turning practice into reality.
