Home Ground

06/10/09

There’s nothing better than sailing on you home ground with your mates, apart from seeing a few new faces that is. Point Clear will never feel the power of a real wave break against it shores, but the combination of endless jumping out side the bay and flat water inside make a perfect playground to share regardless of you abilities, and with this windless spell breaking on a weekend how could I ask for more.

Having been a guest at ClubVass on many an occasion it was my time to play host as a few of the crew turned up at point clear. Adding to our number was Simon Crowther, a name many will associate with the credit at the bottom of many a picture in Boards. But while his backpack was loaded with the latest canon cameras, today was more about doing it that watching it.

Thinking I’d got everything covered by sailing a camera out to the spit with my Aquapack strapped to my backpack, though Simon took a little longer getting out that the rest of us. He’d gone one better and sailed out with all his camera kit, while I worried about the thousands of pounds he was risking, it was the extra kilos that had him sinking up to his knees.

Having made the effort to get it there you’d think we’d have made more use of it, but with me hanging on to a 4.7 and he a 4.2 neither of us really wanted to spend time behind the lens. Ok , so we took a few shots, but that was more from guilt than need, but for me the crazy thing about our new additions to point clear is they all live locally and yet haven’t sailed here before.

Max may live the ClubVass life but home is still Colchester which is my nearest town, and way back when it was his farther that I battled with on the start line of Alton water, and still this was Pete’s first time at Point Clear, though I’m now sure it wont be his last.

This was a one-day wonder and while I craved a repeat session for Sunday I was heading back up to Rutland Water. Normally I get there around once every few years, this year it’s been nearly once a month. The UKWA were in force once again but this time it was the instructor’s last blast that really drew my attention.

We’d like to see a lot more new faces at all our beaches and as that will only be achieved through our windsurfing schools and the energy of the instructors it was good to see a few faces helping out in way of thanks.
