Dakine in the Club

26/07/09

Back on the plane and heading home after another fantastic Vass week. With good winds, speed week not only flew past but it’s the best-attended week we’ve ever had. While we had a great mix on the week, my lasting moments will be windsurfing with my boy’s as both became windsurfers rather than just doing it for Dad. Though from the way Reece was handling the conditions I’d better watch out.

Last year I said planning in the foot straps next to Reece was my finest moment ever in windsurfing, this year it all changed. No longer planning next to, but planning with, it may not sound like much has changed but this was a huge change.

Having finally cracked the waterstart Reece started charging at it, no one likes falling in but once the waterstart is mastered it doesn’t really matter how many times you fall and this was the key to his improvement. I wasn’t daft enough to doing the teaching, I left that to the ClubVass boys, not only  are they superb instructors,  but we all know Dad’s no nothing, or at least that’s what my kids keep telling me.

The Dunt family joined us again this year, Mark used to windsurf with me twenty three years ago, too many years away from it put him in the same group as Reece but still just ahead. He too rediscovered the joys of blasting out to sea, though on one occasion I thought he would join me in the boat as  gust proved the elements still had the upper hand.

It wouldn’t be ClubVass with out the over indulgence, we’ll never complain about too much wind, while I’m sure there’s a lot of aching bodies on the plane, it’s the food and late nights that really take there toll. The options to eat out in the town are endless, though my personal recommendation is Penguins, just watch out as the portions are huge.

When it comes to the demon drinks the Zeus bar is the danger zone. Here you’ll see everyone you passed on the water and more, just don’t be surprised if the on water rivalry continues when the Blue Juice comes out. Getting back to the room at silly o’clock soon becomes the norm, but I’ll give you with one word of warning, somersaulting off the ledge in Zeus may be good for the soul, but it has reproductions on the body… ouch.

But before I go I've got to give the guys at Dakine a big thank you for ensuring all the speed week crew stood out from the crowd in their latest rash vest. Chris Cunningham showed family form as he flew towards the speed gun to take to honours and receive a subscription to boards, while Jimbo may not have find his form in the moment but took the second subscription by setting his own course and topping off the gps ladder.
