What's in a name

11/05/2009

Over the years I’ve been called all sorts, most of which I won’t repeat, but a new title has been rumoured on the boards forum. While for those who need a box for everything could say it’s true, but for me “team mate” describes it better. While it appears to have raised a few questions, it probably answers the question, what brands will I ride!

Everything is the answer, and if you look back over the months you’ll see this hasn’t been a sudden change. To say I was surprised when asked if an editors job sounded attractive would be an understatement, hell, I couldn’t be more dyslexic, but then if you’re a regular on these pages, you’ll know this already.

As that suggestion came from those who are not only addicted to windsurfing, but also the backbone of Boards, it came as a real complement. I’ve taken a few months to get a better understanding how the mag comes together, and I’m sure there’s a lot more learning to be done, but with this enthusiastic team to teach me I’m sure this is one school I’ll be happy to attend.

So this didn’t happen over night, good job really as I spent the week chasing the wind. National windsurfing week finally gave the weather a reason to play ball. While I’d like to save the best pictures for the magazine, here are a few from my week. There would have been more, but Pete Davis managed to drop my sixteen-gig card in the sea.

In true fisherman’s style, I’m sure there were the best of the day. Being on the west coast, most of the pictures were into the light so I waded out into the waves to catch a few sailors coming past on the inside. The light was perfect as it lit the hotel in the background and the vans on the beach with their front wheels touching the peek of high tide.

To be fair, a board jumping would have been better for the foreground, caught one rider planing in from the left while the crests of four braking waves brought the picture together. At least that’s how I remember it; just hope no one finds the chip to prove me wrong.

May as well enjoy having Pete on his back foot, the mag’s out next week and I know he’ll be coming back with a few sharp comments about my title, but then there’s not much you can say about being large that I haven’t heard before.
