It seems to have been an eternity coming, but it was worth the wait, it felt like I’d been given the keys to a sweetshop. Sunday was the best day of the year, no wonder the beaches packed. With the series of beach locations I’m writing for Boards, I left the boys at home and went off to sail a couple of different beaches.
When I decided to do my coastal trips for Boards, I hadn’t considered the wind would turn against us for so long. I’ve now got a permanent eye on the weather, ok, I’ve always got that, but now it’s not just for my home beach but everyone else’s, I really want to see what our coast has to offer.
Don’t tell the wife, but I’m not doing it from the goodness of my heart, there’s always an ulterior motive. I used to get around the country a lot a few years ago, doing demo etc, but with the return of speed I ended up aboard more often than not.
2007 was a wake up call. I’ve always dreamt of travelling from one location to the next, and here I was doing it. I do realise how lucky I’ve been, but there’s something wrong about dreams that come true. Reality is never as good as dream; I’d not factored in the days sat in airports, moments missed with friends and family. But the worst is, what do you then dream about.
Simple, doing what I always did, go sailing with my mates, find a few new spots, or as I realised this weekend, revisiting a few old ones can be an even bigger buzz. With camera in one hand and a board in the other, this year feel like its shaping up to be my best ever.
