I though someone had to die before you could celebrate their lives, should have guessed my old man wouldn’t have missed a party. Dad, or as everyone else knows him, Reg White has been at the centre of cat sailing around the world. Not only racing, but also designing and building, three of the classes he’s brought to water headed out from our home beach during the weekend.
At 73 Dad’s decided its time to start racing again, and no shortage of grandchildren to take as his crew, he led the fleet out to the line. The sun may have been shining, but the wind was absent, not the normal weather a White would do well, but you can never write off the old man.
He just missed out on a podium spot at prize giving with fourth over all, but it was his first in the opening race that showed he still had his style of old. Being home turf it was were a more White’s taking prizes at the end of the weekend. Oddly it was Dave White who took the first spot in the Hurricane’s, but not only was this Dave White not me, he wasn’t even family.
Good weekend for sure, but for all the family the best was a surprise visit from Dad’s gold medal winning crew, and mum’s brother. He’s always hated me calling him “uncle John” but even though we’re no longer kids, he’ll still be uncle John to me, Diane and cousin Richard also came over from Canada with him.
Brother Rob couldn’t race for real, but he used the event to test a new cat they’re bring out. I’ve avoided boats as long as I can remember, but good to see this one seems to be going well as I’m going to be using it in Weymouth next weekend.
Hadn’t thought about Weymouth when I decided to stop with Gaastra and Tabou, and for sure I wont have made any decision by then. Though I guess that doesn’t matter as I’m not only the official photographer, but helping with the timing, sailing a boat, kitesurfing and windsurfing, can’t see I’ll do justice to any, but in away that’s what Weymouth is all about… having the crack.
After last weeks pix at the skate park, there was a few more kids wanting a pic or two, at least it gives me a chance to get it right. With camera in hand and family in town it would have been a crime to let the moment go, so a few sunset pix followed.
Everyone seems keen for summer to be over, or at least it feels like that way when you hear people talk. Aaron and I joined Nik and his two for a bit of fun on the water, what Nik didn’t tell me I was just coming to look after the kids in the water, more of a mobile water starting station. Actually they picked it up so quickly I ended up swimming after the boat all afternoon.
