Desperate Measures
16/06/08

I’ve been looking for an excuse to get away from the decking all week, its becoming an endless task, but with next to no wind desperate measures were called for. There was a light wind out of the north, but its off shore everywhere around our coast, looking at Google earth we found a beach upwind from Walton that looked promising, only problem you can’t drive there.

It took a little persuasion, but Anthony, Shaun, Nik, and I loaded the mountain bikes into the back of the van and planned to ride to the beach. It was easier to take the kite gear, but even then Nik made that look hard.

Google earth proved to be spot on, the path down, direction of the beach, but it doesn’t really show how the beach really is. It looked great from space but close up there were rocks just off the beach and a string of spikes peaking out of the white water, not really that inviting.

I ventured out shortly followed by Shaun. There was just about enough to have a little fun so long as you could dodge the obstacles, something the other two weren’t so keen on, and to be honest it wasn’t the spot to be learning.

The beach boys started to look a little pissed off on the beach, so we packed up and headed back for the van, a little more off road this time. Everyone had there moment on the way back, I ended up going over the handlebars and got jammed between bike and kite board.

We ended up on Walton’s backwaters as the tide covered the marshes. It may only work for a few hours but it’s a better spot, as long as you don’t drop the kite that is. The place is full of weeds and it only takes a line to catch the water, moments later its game over and hours of untangling. When we finished the session Nik had caught his weight in seaweed, but then, every time he goes out there’s a disaster in the making.

The deck has grown a bit, guess a plan would have been helpful, but then that would be too simple. Think it’s going to be awhile before this one gets finished, but on the good side, I even got my boy Reece to lend a hand. I’d hate to be fifteen again
